From the moment Bones Hyland met Tim Connelly during his pre-draft interview, the two took a liking to each other when Hyland performed some of the music he made for Connelly.
Connelly drafted Hyland when he was running basketball operations in Denver, and he brought Hyland to Minnesota late in the 2024-25 season after the Clippers traded Hyland and the Hawks bought him out of his deal.
“We just had a different connection, a real close connection,” Hyland said of Connelly in October. “… Just that belief he has in me. He’s always had my back. That’s a guy I’m really appreciative of.”
That relationship will continue as the Wolves signed Hyland to a one-year, $2.9 million deal to return to Minnesota. That’s the minimum contract for Hyland, who is entering his sixth NBA season.
After joining the team on a two-way deal in 2025, Hyland saw significant playing time the following season and became an important part of the Wolves’ rotation by season’s end.
He played in 71 games last season while averaging 8.5 points with 2.6 assists. After the team gave backup point guard minutes to Rob Dillingham to start the season, Hyland supplanted him and became a part of the rotation by mid-December. He never really left the rotation until the postseason.
His shot-making (39% from three-point range) was helpful off the bench for the Wolves, as was the pace with which he played. When the Wolves acquired Ayo Dosunmu, the two injected a lot of speed into the Wolves’ transition game and the team dubbed them “Twin Turbos.”
Hyland’s “Skelly Celly” celebration after making a three, in which he points and waves his hands at the crowd, became a fan favorite, and fans enjoyed the infectious energy he had on the floor.

When the Wolves played the Spurs in the second-round of the playoffs, Hyland didn’t play in Games 3 and 4 and just played mop-up duty in Games 5 and 6.
Hyland tended to play his best basketball when Anthony Edwards was either out because of injury or off the floor, since Hyland tends to play best with the ball in his hands and Edwards can dominate the ball.
Hyland now provides depth in the backcourt behind Edwards and LaMelo Ball, who the team acquired in a trade last week. The Wolves now have contracts agreed to with 11 players for next season and could sign second-round draft pick Isaiah Evans to a minimum NBA deal as well.
